Search Tips Search queries can be made with just a word or a phrase; however, the focus of the queries may be expanded to yield more complete results. These tips will get you started with basic query language and acquaint you with the enhanced capabilities of the improved ABA.com search tool.
1. Search for words with the same prefix. This is done by typing the word followed by one asterisk (*).
Example - type key* to find key , keying , keyhole , keyboard , and so on.
2. Search for all forms of a word. This is done by typing the word followed by two asterisks (**).
Example - type sink** to find sink , sinking , sank , and sunk .
3. Search with the keyword NEAR, rather than AND, for words close to each other.
Example - type system AND manager to look for the words system and manager on the same page. Or, type system NEAR manager to find both words on the same page and have the returned pages ranked in order of proximity: The closer together the words are, the higher the rank of that page.
4. Refine your queries with the AND NOT keywords to exclude certain text.
Example - type surfing AND NOT the Net , to find all instances of surfing but not surfing the Net .
5. Put quotation marks around keywords if you want the search tool to take them literally.
Example - type "system near manager" to only look for the complete phrase system near manager . If you type the same query without quotation marks, system near manager , the search tool will search for all documents with the words system and manager on the same page as in #3.
