With the extreme cold weather, WBA received requests from several members wondering what their fellow bankers are doing in regard to operating hours.

In response to these requests, WBA conducted a short survey of Bank CEOs to gain a better understanding of how banks are responding to current weather. The survey was sent to CEOs yesterday, January 29, at approximately 2:45 p.m. with a message requesting the survey be filled out by 3:45 p.m. WBA acknowledges that this short survey period limits the results.

The survey received responses from a total of 84 banks. Results are below:

For Wednesday, Jan. 30:
47% (39 banks) Open all day
27% (22 banks) Closed all day
16% (13 banks) Open, but with shortened hours

10% (8 banks) responded "Other" with these remarks:

  • Open, but would close if local banks close.
  • Open all day with limited staff
  • Open for retail with many others working via laptop at home
  • Currently open but in discussions on staffing and potential closing of branches.
  • Closing 1 hour earlier than normal.
  • Playing it by ear. Operating with regular hours but with a reduced staff, or allowing them to come late and leave early if needed.
  • Open with limited staff.

For Thursday, Jan. 31:
70% (58 banks) Open all day
0% Closed all day
20% (16 banks) Open, but with shortened hours

10% (8 banks) responded "Other" with these remarks:

  • Open, but would close if local banks close.
  • Open all day with limited staff
  • Will depend on how temps go for the day.
  • Have not decided on Thursday yet
  • Wait & see, likely opening late.
  • We haven't made our decision yet but would be interested in what others are doing.
  • Will determine on the 30th.
