National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has teamed up with Fox21 to present the Strength in the Community Scholarship for the past three years. The scholarship is designed to help lessen the burden of paying for higher education for local students in our region. To apply, students needed to write a 350-word essay about what growing up in the Northland means to them. The winners were chosen by the Scholarship Committee of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation.

  • Ten students receive $1,000
  • One student receives $5,000 for best essay only
  • One student receives $10,000 for overall essay and additional criteria

At the scholarship ceremony Avantika D’Cruz-Wigren from Ashland, Wis. was announced as the big $10,000 winner. The Duluth Superior Area Community Scholarship Foundation will work with Avantika to make sure the funds are properly allocated to her each semester. In the fall she will go on to study Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

“It’s truly an honor to be able to give back to a Northland student in this manner. We need to invest in our youth as they’re the future of this region. It’s our responsibility to show them that local businesses care in hopes of having them return after completing their higher education,” said Steve Burgess, president and CEO of National Bank of Commerce.
