Joan A. Sorenson passed away on January 6 due to complications after heart surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.
Joan was born on August 21, 1933, in Chicago, Ill., and married Keith J. Sorenson on November 4, 1961. After graduating high school, she worked as the assistant to the president of First Wisconsin Bank and Trust for several years. Following her marriage to Keith, she devoted her time to raising their family.
Joan actively supported her children’s education, participating in parent organizations at their schools. When the elementary school her children were attending was not able to provide hot lunches for their students, she organized a group of mothers to make weekly hot lunches and take them to the school. She also organized an annual “Fun Fair” that raised money to support a variety of school activities. In her spare time, Joan was an avid bowler, winning multiple league championships with a team that included her husband and their close friends.
Joan enjoyed traveling with her family, planning annual family vacations to the Great Smoky Mountains and the Grand Ole Opry. After her husband retired, they were able to expand their travels, taking trips to explore the US and visit family. One of her favorite places to visit was Door County where she began collecting Pipka Christmas statuettes, which she proudly displayed in her home year-round.
Joan valued her close relationships with friends and neighbors, but most of all cherished the time she was able to spend with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Joan is survived by her daughter Carol Musil and husband Bart (Woodbury, Minn.); her son John Sorenson and wife Julie (Lewisburg, Penn.); her step-daughter Sandra Wagner and husband Charles (Janesville); her step-son Gary Sorenson (Edgerton); seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and her brother John Bauer and wife Kay (Brookfield).
Joan was preceded in death by her husband Keith J. and her parents John M. and Anna E. Bauer.
