Executive Letter: Reaching the Next Generation of Bankers
By Rose Oswald Poels
Like our members, the Wisconsin Bankers Association is dedicated to ensuring Wisconsin’s banking industry remains resilient for years to come. This focus extends not just to our current membership — over 30,000 bankers strong — but to our future bankers as well. However, like many industries, a shrinking talent pool threatens the long-term viability and competitiveness of Wisconsin banks. As such, I wish to remind you that WBA is your partner in nurturing the next generation of bankers.
Member banks across Wisconsin are encouraged to share available job opportunities on our Bankers Marketplace. This Wisconsin-specific resource provides a platform to showcase the diverse roles available to aspiring bankers and skilled professionals. Internships — which are a great opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience and engage with the banking industry — may be posted by members at no cost.
Additionally, WBA recently created a ‘Careers in Banking’ brochure to assist bankers in their efforts to promote the industry and its benefits as a career. Incorporating information featured on our ‘Careers in Banking’ landing page, the free brochures are also customizable for banks looking to showcase their unique offerings and opportunities, innovative technologies, and the societal impact of the industry. Brochures are a helpful resource for any career fair your bank may participate in and are available to all member banks upon request.
WBA is also proud to facilitate “career night” presentations throughout the academic year to aid in closing the gap between students and professionals. In February — with the help of nearly 30 banker volunteers — WBA hosted panels at UW–Eau Claire, UW–Green Bay, UW–La Crosse, UW–Platteville, and UW–Whitewater. Between the five events, over 200 students were informed of the careers available to them and why the banking industry might be a good fit for them.
In collaboration with our members, WBA plays a pivotal role in shaping the narrative, cultivating lasting connections, and paving the way for a prosperous future. The recent ‘Careers in Banking’ events clearly indicate students’ curiosity regarding the fulfilling opportunities within the banking industry. It is up to us to continue our efforts to make sure the potential bankers of tomorrow are well-informed and aware of the possibilities that lie ahead.
